At the Red Sea 2010
A friend recently posed this question. And she didn’t want a quick reply – she desired a thoughtful response, not a pat answer. So here you are, girlfriend. Here’s why I believe what I believe.
It is true that I was born into a Christian family and raised in the church. And, yes, I have no recollection of life without Jesus. I always knew of Him, although I didn’t always follow Him. The Bible tells us “even the demons believe” (James 2:18-20) and before we become “children of light“, we walk in darkness. I was most certainly in the dark before becoming a child of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Argue what you may – genetics or environment. I’m not a Christ-follower because I was born into a Christian family. I didn’t ‘inherit’ Christendom. I’m a Christian by faith, not by familiarity or family. He has become familiar to me through faith.
Why?
The why for me is a changed life. One day, not so long ago, I decided to take Jesus at His Word. Read More »

June 28: U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan
Who is the source of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan’s truth? This is a quote from her opening remarks before the Senate Judiciary Committee:
“…no one has a monopoly on truth and wisdom.”
Don’t be shocked by her comments. We live in a post-modern society which tells us truth can’t be known. Truth is subjective. Truth is relative to each one’s personal experience.
This type of thinking is not new. Truth was being questioned back in the 1st century. Take a look at this exchange between Jesus and Pontius Pilate Read More »
First in a New Series: “Truth or Fiction?”
The “Truth of Fiction” Series will address current cultural messages that are contrary to the truth of God’s Word.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 1 Corinthians 2:13-15
Our True Source of Joy

Yesterday for me was the day most women dread, a day when we decide to “do the right thing” and heed the counsel of our doctor. Yes, yesterday was Mammography Day. Women know why they dread it and men, frankly, don’t want to know what they’re missing! I’ll skip the details get to the point.
As I entered the facility for the procedure, my eyebrows lifted a bit…very nice, very cushy, very pink! For a moment my thoughts were on a friend who’s going to a third world country for a year of service to our Lord. I knew the ladies she would be ministering to would not have medical facilities like this! This facility was spa-like and truly lovely. We are blessed to the point of absurdity – all the latest in digital imaging surrounded by soft lighting and muted pink decor.
I gave my name to the receptionist and had a seat as directed. My eyes were immediately drawn to the feature wall in front of me. There was a HUGE quote by Thomas Wolfe stenciled on the wall – several feet high and at least 10 feet long. It read:
There are some people who have the quality of richness and joy in them and they communicate it to everything they touch. It is first of all a physical quality; then it is a quality of the spirit.
What….?! I read it again letting the words sink in. Then I realized someone was staring at me. I was bust-ed, so to speak! (Mammo humor here) Read More »
Friday night, I was sitting in the audience of our annual Horizon Christian Fellowship Women’s Retreat. We were watching the broadcast of Larry King Live on CNN. Yes, you read correctly. An unusual activity for a Christian women’s retreat…watching cable TV and it wasn’t Fox News!
Our senior pastor, Bob Botsford, had recently commented in his blog about recording artist’s Jennifer Knapp’s coming out. Ms. Knapp announced that she has been in an 8+ year lesbian relationship. Since she was professing to be a Christ follower, Pastor Bob responded to her announcement by clarifying the Biblical position on homosexual relationships. All Christ-followers, especially those in leadership, have a responsibility to reach out to those who profess Christian faith and yet live their lives contrary to Biblical teachings. The goal is always restoration to fellowship with God.
